Why I Love Chocolates
“ Mom, where did you hide the chocolate again!” I gave a scream from the kitchen. “ I did not! It’s in the jar!” my mother shrieked from somewhere in the house. “ Liar! I’m going to turn the house upside down, if you don’t give me any!” I screamed once again banging and crashing the cupboards. This was one of the daily routines of my household. Like clockwork, I would dash into the kitchen would go into brat mode and scream for chocolate, I can’t help it, I love chocolate too much. Oh? You want me to describe chocolate in three words? Ooh tough I would have to say...delicious, irresistible, refined. Those are just a few words to describe the item that once was as valuable as gold and was considered a sacred item that only the elite few could posses. Currently, this item is booming in our industrialized world with millions of them marching across the globe and is a must have item for little kids round the world.
This gorgeous confectionery is the stuff of gods. When I hear the word chocolate, my will begins to crumble and my taste buds try to picture the smooth, creamy feel that slides down my throat and leaves a sweet and seductive taste that tempts me to have just one more.Other than the ravishing taste that chocolate gives, it has many other bits and bobs like having medical properties and being versatile in it’s uses, that makes chocolate so lovable.
When I was younger, my mother would always catch me in the act, grabbing the hand painted multicoloured jar from it’s “fortress” on the top shelf and end up on the ground, empty. In a flood of chocolate wrappers, I would be smiling sweetly, with my face stained with chocolaty evidence of me pigging out on those little pieces of heaven. Finally my mother grew sick of the act and told me that if I had too many sweets, I would end up strapped on the dentist chair getting my teeth pulled. With the horrifying images of dentist “torture” tools and an insane dentist performing some sort of diabolical surgery on me, I steered clear of chocolates for a while, but now it’s a whole new thing. Whenever I eat chocolate now, I brush off the heavy guilt of gaining a few pounds and ignore the nagging thought of going to have to work out at the gym, instead I think of the good these little treats would do for me. Now you must be thinking: This bloke’s a total lunatic! What good would fattening sickly sweet chocolate do?
Well you may be surprised what chocolate can do for you, so read on. I love chocolate for it’s abundant medical properties, it may look like an ordinary chocolate bar but it has plenty of power packed goodies in it. Some people say you can never stay young forever, well chocolate has just proved them wrong, chocolate, especially dark chocolate has chemicals called “flavornoids” and can help keep the heart young and healthy, thus preventing aging. So whenever I snack on these little treats, I know that I’ll be avoiding the wrinkles and “crow’s feet” that come with age. Also, I love the fact that chocolate can help fight heart disease, with it’s antioxidants and flavanols it keeps the heart healthy and reduces the risk of heart disease. So it really is a chocolate a day, keeps the doctor away!
Chocolate in a sense is never dull or plain. Chocolates can come in various varieties and each has a unique flavor and texture. Whenever I go to the chocolate aisle at the local supermarket, I feel like I am a kid in a candy store. I was spoilt for choice with the vast varieties of chocolate sitting neatly in rows, calling out to me to buy them. I love chocolate for its variety in types. From the expensive Belgium chocolate that leaves a warm tingly feeling when it slowly glides down my throat, to the milky sweet delight of white chocolate that leaves me in ecstasy. Whenever I get a box of different kinds of chocolate, I would just lay in bed, watch a show and let the chocolates take me away, their tastes dancing in my mouth. This is what makes chocolates so lovable, each kind is a like an adventure, persuading my palate to explore it’s notes and complexity .
I still can’t get over the time where I tried to make chocolate toothpaste. I remember trying to get melted chocolate into the tube and when my dad came to brush his teeth, he was in for a nasty surprise, I also remember the time when I tried to make a chocolate bracelet for my girlfriend and she loved it, when she kissed me things got a little too “steamy” and the bracelet melted off her hand and onto her new white dress,I never saw her ever since and that brings me to my new point on why I love chocolates, because of it’s versatility in it’s uses, chocolate never stays as just chocolate and it can be shaped into various fresh and funky products. Chocolate is so versatile that it has caught the eye of many businesses and now chocolate can be found everywhere from facial masks at the spas to wacky chocolate shoes. Chocolate is so flexible in it’s products, it has entered various sectors other than the food industry. So whenever I walk down the streets, I will always find some product made of chocolate.
Chocolate has been around for ages and I love it for it’s rich history. It’s origins has been traced to as early as the Azrecs. It’s been dubbed to be as valuable as gold during the past. During the Aztec's period it was used to pay taxes and also used as a form of currency, they believe eating chocolates will prevent fatigue and increase wisdom. 5000 years ago, chocolate drinks were only for royal males and courts of Europe had there own personal chocolate makers. It was even used as a form of medicine during old English days; it was used to cure stomachaches. It was even used in Casanova, with a mix of champagne and chocolate was used to attract ladies. And even more astonishing fact is that it was an acceptable substitute for alcohol in the late 19th century! With is rich history spanning from the beginning of man, the Aztecs to the aristocratic times European history, chocolate has been loved throughout history and it’s not surprising that a European man coined: “ Chocolate is the food of the gods”
“ Just one more please, I won’t have anymore till dinner” I still recall in the past were I’ll be on the ground begging my mother to give me another of those scrumptious truffles she bought at the candy store, and when I heard that no more chocolate will be given, I flew into a temper tantrum kicking and screaming on the ground. I bet that’s every mother has encountered their kids screaming and crying for more chocolate, but who could blame them, it’s so addictive. Chocolate is so addictive both mentally and physically. Mentally speaking, chocolates have endorphins in them that makes the brain feel light and happy. With it’s scent of gently roasted cocoa beans wafting in notes and it’s “feel good” smell similar to freshly baked bread and brewed coffee. It’s a symphony of scents and notes. Also it’s addictiveness in taste, I just can’t get enough of that orchestra of texture and taste, milky, creamy and with a delicate and smooth finish, it’s loved by millions around the world. You can find chocolates anywhere from the boxes in the grocers to the silver platter in a polished glass case on a high end street. Chocolate is loved by all ages and pockets.
Before you run down to the store, buying heaps of chocolates and stash them away before you’re spouse comes back home, listen to this conclusion, chocolate now has become and international must have candy. I love everything about chocolate and I will continue loving it till time eventually comes to take me away. Sometimes I wold go back to my old house and head into the kitchen with it’s rusty hinges and dusty tops and there on it’s little fortress is the jar with it’s colours that have faded into dull bleak blotches. Teary eyed, I would tear my eyes away from the jar as brings back so many memories, now lost in the oblivion of time and on some occasions I would sit on the ground with the jar in hand, recalling back the fragments of memories of my “acrobatics” on the kitchen stool trying to get the jar of “treasures.” As the sky suddenly grows dark and the cold ominous rain echos round the long empty house, I walk out and dash to escape the rain, never turning back as if I had betrayed a dear friend.
