Listening and Speaking During An Interview (18/10/11)

Today in class, Miss Abena showed us how to speak and listen during an interview. She first showed us an interview with Beckham and asked us to tick and explain the style the interviewer was using when interviewing Beckham. This was useful as we got a rough idea on how to interview someone properly. Afterwards, Miss Abena split us into groups and asked us to do some role play. One person acts as a interviewer, the other the interviewee and the other two were the callers. This was a great activity as we could understand the roles and improve on each individual role.

Halfway through, Miss Abena showed us some styles we could use when doing our interview.

Interviewer
  • Use a mixture of open and closed questions
  • Prepare a list of questions but ask the questions depending on the flow of the conversation
  • Challenge the interviewee with difficult questions

Interviewee
  • Use different styles of speech when talking to attract your listener (humour, rhetorical questions, descriptive language etc)
  • Use things like "it depends on...." "well...." "so what do i think about sweets? well..." to ensure there's no awkward silences
The role play activity was a very useful teaching tool as we could use and get familiar to the styles of interviewing and being interviewed. For tommorow's lesson we would be doing the assessment for real so to prepare for the lesson I will ask my dorm mate to do role play and interview each other so that I can get feedback about how fluent and interesting my interview was. Also, I will look through my essay again to find key points to use in my interview
